What is Git Bash Full Screen Flicker?

Git Bash full screen flicker is a visual glitch where the terminal window strobe-flashes or stutters during use. This typically occurs when the MinTTY terminal emulator struggles with hardware acceleration or display driver conflicts.

The issue is most prevalent on Windows 10 and 11 when users maximize the terminal window or enter full-screen mode. It can cause text to disappear momentarily or the entire window to turn black and white rapidly.

Step-by-Step Solutions

1. Disable GPU Hardware Acceleration

The most common cause of flickering is the terminal trying to use your GPU for rendering text. You can disable this in the options menu.

Right-click the Git Bash title bar and select Options…

Navigate to Window in the left-hand sidebar. Look for the “Hardware Acceleration” dropdown and set it to None.

Click Apply and restart your Git Bash instance to see if the flicker persists.

2. Change the Rendering Backend

If hardware acceleration isn’t the culprit, changing how the terminal renders text can solve the problem.

Open the Options menu again and navigate to the Terminal section.

Look for the Type or Rendering settings. Try switching from “Direct2D” to “GDI”. GDI is an older rendering method that is much more stable on integrated graphics cards.

3. Update Git for Windows

Old versions of MinTTY have known bugs regarding window resizing and full-screen flickering. Updating ensures you have the latest stability patches.

Run the following command in your terminal to check for updates:

git update-git-for-windows

Follow the prompts to download and install the latest version, then reboot your computer.

4. Check Transparency Settings

High transparency levels can sometimes cause rendering lag in full-screen mode. Go to Options > Window and ensure the “Transparency” slider is set to Off or a low level.

5. Reset MinTTY Configuration

If the flicker persists, you can try resetting your configuration file. Locate your `.minttyrc` file, usually found in your user home directory, and rename it to back it up.

mv ~/.minttyrc ~/.minttyrc.bak

Restart Git Bash to generate a fresh, default configuration.
